We all know someone who is totally oblivious to how they show up to others. They, continually, get results they are not happy with and don’t understand why. We see, clearly, the reason why but they aren’t open to hearing it, so we say nothing.

You step into self-aware by reviewing yourself as objectively as possible. Review your behavior, not with judgment, but with curiosity. As you learn from yourself and others what works and what doesn’t, you can choose to change your behavior. Through this, you create growth and expand your character.

2. Practice it

Building self-awareness is a skill that needs to be practiced and re-enforced. We all know that if we don’t schedule time for something it won’t happen. Plan time in your calendar to reflect on what works well for you and what doesn’t. Make it a point to use that time to review a key meeting or interaction, to define an assignment for yourself each week, create a feedback session, or whatever will help you to keep practicing.

Many companies provide leadership training but why not include self-awareness classes as part of leadership training. Management training programs would produce better leaders and managers as a result. The investment will far outweigh the cost.

3. Seek External Feedback

Often, how you see yourself varies from how others see you.  Being conscious of how you interact with others and being open to feedback is key. Ask for feedback directly and be ready to receive it, openly. Your only response to it gets to be “Thank you” and “is there anything else?” Take it in and reflect on it. Later, evaluate the source and what was said then see what sticks. You only own what is true for you. Some of what they say reflects their challenges coming but nonetheless, all of what they say is valuable to how you interact with them and how you are perceived by them.

It is hard to look in the mirror and see your flaws but see them as an opportunity to grow, not as an excuse to stay where you are. Live in a mindset that perfection is only found in growth and the pursuit of growth. It isn’t about perfection in your character, perfection lies in the facts that you are open and taking an active role in your personal growth.

One Great Productivity App And Other Tips For Editing Text

I am more a visionary looking at the big picture than the minute details. I am better at seeing the errors in other people’s writing, concepts, strategies than my own- but who isn’t right?

The important thing is I know my strengths and weaknesses. Now it is time to start acting on them.

From a young age, I was showed that spelling and grammar were not my strong suite. At the age of 12, I went away my first year to sleep away camp and would write Wooden Blocks with the text: Grammarhome frequently.

I don’t recall writing to my brother but he must have been so excited to hear from me that he read my letters and wrote me back. As he was an enthusiastic student and budding writer his letters to me were more creative than I had imagined.

When I received his letter I was excited to get mail. It makes you feel important when mail arrives for you. My excitement faded when disappointment set in. The letter was not a letter written to me, but the letter I sent home. It was hardly recognizable behind the red pen marks correcting my grammar and spelling. There was so much red it was hard to see the original letter. I was not impressed and did not correct it. I think that may have discouraged me from writing home as much.

Funny, I later found out he corrected the grammar of the graffiti in the college bathrooms. At least they wrote something back for him to read.

When I went off to college, my same brother bought me a spell checker electronic unit. At the time we didn’t have a spell checker on the computers so it was like a digital dictionary providing you with the proper spelling. I guess I should be thrilled that my brother, yet again, was trying to help me be better. I guess I was not yet into self-development as this “favor” also went unappreciated and unused.

A few months ago, my brother sent me another reminder. Now I am old enough to appreciate the value of this gift. Every time he reads my book, a blog of mine, my website or a brochure he finds a mistake. I know this is something that can reflect poorly on me, and it is my nature to focus on the content and not these details. It continues to be a challenge for me to this day. To many people seeing my content for the first time, these details matter. I have had people say they couldn’t focus on my presentation any further because there was a spelling error.

I finally realize I need to take better care.

So what he sent me this time was a productivity app and plugin for my browser called Grammarly. I love it. I get to see all the red marks that work doesn’t seem to pick up and can make those changes before it gets published. Install this productivity app because it is important to pay attention to thee details and we need productivity apps to support us and provide the structure to do what we know.

In addition to the productivity app, here are a few other manual tricks to keeping your emails, brochures, and other texts error-free.

• Read what you’ve written out loud. You will catch the errors quicker when reading it out loud.
• Increase the font size. Squinting isn’t helping you read the passage or find the errors. Using extra-large text helps to enable easier reading.
• Let someone else read it. 4 eyes are better than 2. They will almost always see something you did not because you have looked at it so many times you see what it is supposed to be.
• Print it out. You will catch more mistakes when you print it to read it.
• Read the whole thing from start to finish.

No one understands better than me that spelling and grammar may not be your strong point. It is still up to you to deliver quality. You need to put the controls in place, take the extra time necessary and get the productivity apps and technology to support you and your efforts. It is possible something slips through the cracks but at least you can say you put in the effort.

We all know New Year’s resolutions are a farce. They are brought on from disappointment from last years results, or from the excessive eating and drinking that goes on during the holiday period and leaves you a few pounds overweight and with short term determination to get back into better healthy habits.

At year end you have the desire but it isn’t a longing so the feeling fades as quickly as it came to be replaced by some other short term desire.

If you want to make a goal stick consider the following 6 ways to create greater accountability and set yourself up for success.

  1. Make a promise

Promises are often more effective than a New Year’s resolution as a promise goes deeper into our psyche. When we give our word, we are challenging our values and self-definition of honesty and integrity if we don’t do it.

“I will do the my planning fo the next day every afternoon” my client told me.

“How will we hold you accountable to do it?” I asked.

“I will do it.” He said with certainty.

I have heard him say that before and then not do it. So I pressed him further, understanding he didn’t want to create any accountability.

I asked him if he valued his word,

Of course he said “yes.”

“Do you promise you will do it?” I asked. He shifted in his seat and started to come up with how it might now always be possible.

“Can you promise for one week?” I asked.

I got him to promise for one week. He did it every day that week. That promise got him in a routine and created momentum. When you promise yourself that is one thing, but to promise a third party means more to us. We perform better when being watched and when we commit to others.

  1. Get a buddy

The best way to follow through with anything is to create accountability to help us follow through. f you are looking to get fit and go to the gym 3 times a week. Get someone to go with you, join a class, pay a trainer. These are ways to push you to follow through even when you don’t feel like it. That is why we give up- we give into our excuses. Its cold, you went t bed late, your tired or whatever your excuse is. We are less likely to voice our excuses to our buddy and when we are really a good friend or buddy, we don’t let them get away with them either. You keep each other going.

  1. Competition

By competing with others you are creating some drive inside to take the goal outside of yourself. We all want to win and it is more fun and more of psychological win when we have an opponent. Yes, you can also compete with yourself and set a way to compete with your last score, but the fact is, our competitive nature really kicks in with an opponent.

You plan to count your steps, well do it with a friend and see how much more you walk when you can see their progress throughout the day. I created a monster in my boyfriend a few years back. I bought him a Fitbit and he used it to compete. He is very competitive in nature so this was the perfect motivator for his steps. he didn’t pay attention to the weight he wanted to lose which doesn’t feel as good as beating a friend on the number of steps each day. The fact that it created a daily win for him, was creating so much momentum and created some very positive habits of taking the stairs, parking far away from the store , etc. He kept up his 10K steps for the whole year. It wasn’t a resolution but a friendly competition. 

  1. Set 30 day Goals

Yearly goals can seem too far away and daunting with a whole year ahead of you. It can create a lot of stress with a big goal looming over you. Just plan for the short term. This will enable you to set realistic targets and create specific steps. You can focus on the next step and avoid overwhelm associated with the enormity of the bigger goal.

  1. Feel the pain and pleasure

We are simple creatures motivated by pain and pleasure. At the start of the promise get clear on both. Feel the pain from the consequences of not doing what you say you will. Really associate yourself with all you are giving up or losing as a result of not following through. Feel the worst that could happen. Really push it to feel such regret, sorry, fear. Then on the flip side, feel the pleasure. What will be different in your life? Why is this so important to you? Who will benefit? Really light up the passion and drive with those questions.

  1. Focus on only one thing

The questions might be, how many resolutions are people making? If you focus on one thing you are likely to make progress. If you address all the things in your life you want to change and then set resolutions for all areas-you loose focus. It is stressful to change everything at once. It all falls apart quickly.

Focus on only one thing. Select the one thing that when you make changes in this area will have the most influence on all other areas. Now you can set specific actions to support yourself. I noticed that one of my clients week after week wasn’t doing what was on the list of commitments they made. Why? It was just too much. I needed to narrow it down to one thing. This kept him focused, made progress, and then he could add additional items. Maybe you are overwhelmed as it is. Make it easy on yourself and create the focus on one thing for the month and then build from there.

My younger son arrived in this world being able to easily create a habits for all parts of his life. When he was two he would come in the house take his shoes off, hang up his coat and put his shoes directly under where his coat hung on “his” peg. I didn’t teach him this, he just did it. He amazed me this past summer as at 15, he fluidly moved through working as a camp counselor almost full time, taking an online line health class, football practice several days a week and piano lessons. He also made his own healthy breakfast and lunch, slept about 8 hours a night and even had fun with friends. It is his habits and his focus that enables him to accomplish more than most adults – and do it in a healthy, low stress way.

You are your habits. Like my son habits, habits are what shape the most successful people and makes them who they are. Arianna Huffington, Tony Robbins, and Michael Phelps are all noted to have habits or rituals that they do every day that help them achieve more.

What is it that my son and successful adults do differently than the rest of us that keep them healthy so they can perform as such a high level?

  1. Don’t Diet: If you listen to some of the big inspirational speakers out there the one things they all include in their talks is to take care of your body for the long term. Unfortunately, most diets aren’t structured for a lifetime. Six week plans and 30 day detoxes may give you short term results, but they shouldn’t be view as much more than a Band-Aid. To get long term results, understanding and being very clear about what “being healthy” looks like for you and why, will deliver the motivation to make healthy choices consistently.
  1. Schedule Time: If your intention is to get to the gym or exercise class and “life” keeps getting in the way, put it in your calendar and make that time non-negotiable. If an hour feels like too much, start with scheduling 15 minutes a couple days a week and build from there. Find times that work for you. Getting up at 5am when you are a night person won’t last for long.
  1. Prioritize Sleep: Sleep is vital to long lasting health and most of us need 7-8 hours every night. More and more research shows that lack of sleep depresses the immune system and increases the risk of everything from the common cold to heart disease. If you want an instant productivity boost get the same amount of sleep every night.
  1. Eat Junk Food (On Occasion): Even the cleanest eaters eat foods that are “less than healthy” that they love. Food is one of the few things that satisfies all 5 senses, essentially at once. Choose the things you like the most and really enjoy them with no stress.
  1. Eat Real Food: The easiest and fastest way to clean up your diet is to lose the processed food. Frozen dinners that are precooked and ready to microwave in a plastic bag are not food. Neither are most of the products that come in a box. Most prepared foods are extremely high in sodium and sugar, sometimes more than a whole day’s RDA in one serving. To help transition and if you do nothing else, look for short ingredient lists and ignore all marketing on the front of the package. Your cereal was not meant to have fish oil in it.
  1. Listen to Your Body: Your body is disconnected from your head. As in you are probably not paying attention to what is going on with your body until you realize you haven’t eaten anything in hours. How often do you eat in your, car, on the run, at your desk, or in front of the TV? Meals have become something that we choke down on the way to something else. Multi-tasking while you eat is an indicator that you may be overeating. Give your body the time and attention it needs and focus, at least for a few minutes, solely on your food. You may find than not only do you lose weight, but food taste better and you feel full longer.

Why do tasks get put off? Because they aren’t scheduled and they might be important but not urgent. We have this battle with importance versus urgency every day and more often than not urgency wins. It is because our brains go 100X more away from pain than towards pleasure. Urgency (real or imagined) creates pain if it doesn’t get done so it gets priority, unless you plan your day and schedule important tasks.
