How to Use Motivational Quotes to Change Habits

Everybody has put off tasks like doing the laundry, making telephone calls to their mothers, or going to the grocery store. Usually, procrastination is not a problem, but for some people, it can be addictive. Fortunately, there are simple things you can do daily to kick the procrastination habit, such as reading procrastination quotes.

How Quotes Help

Reading motivational quotes is a way for people to coach themselves and improve their confidence. Many motivational speakers push the idea that what you think about, you can achieve. There are even quotes from famous people who reiterate that idea:

“Whether you believe you can or you can’t, you are right.” Henry Ford

So, if you have a procrastination problem, you may overcome it by reading quotes that motivate you to do what needs to be done every day.

“My biggest regret could be summed up in one word, and that’s procrastination.” Ron Cooper.

People may respond to this quote because they don’t want to have regrets in their lives, so it might motivate them to act and take care of their responsibilities.

Serve as Reminders

When you visit someone’s office, you may see motivational posters on the wall, or they may have a calendar with motivational quotes on it for every day of the week. Reading quotes can help encourage people and remind them of the goals they are trying to achieve. For instance, a procrastination quote can remind you to take care of the tasks you need to do every day, even if they are mundane.

Instead of reading motivational books, quotes are little packets of wisdom that are easy to digest in a short amount of time for people with busy schedules. They can be read at a glance, and the quotes that you find meaningful can encourage you whenever and wherever you need them to.

So, if you find yourself putting off tasks, remembering the quote: “Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today” by Mark Twain can help light a fire under you to get things done.

Encourages Positive Thinking

Many bad things happen in the world every day, and that can cause people to be negative and complain about everything. Negative thoughts can hold people back and keep them from achieving their dreams. However, reading inspirational quotes can encourage people to overcome negativity and keep striving toward their goals.

Humor also plays a part in positive thinking because laughter naturally reduces stress and laughter can help people live longer lives. Studies have shown that laughter can stimulate the immune system and help counteract the effects of stress on the body. So, if having a long list of tasks to do is stressful for you, instead of putting them off, funny procrastination quotes may encourage you to get them done.

They are Influential

Another reason quotes may be able to inspire people is because they can be influential. If someone famous or in a position of authority says something profound, then people will be more likely to believe it because of the person’s success. Most people see those who have financial success or are in positions of leadership as being wise because of their accomplishments, so their words are perceived as having more gravitas.

For instance, an inspirational quote from someone like Benjamin Franklin is going to hold more weight for people than a motivational speaker whose name is unknown to them. Some of Franklin’s anti-procrastination quotes can be reminders to people about not wasting time:

“Lost time is never found again.” Or “You may delay, but time will not.”

Benefiting from Quotes

When some people read quotes, they may glance at them on a poster and calendar and think they are nice words and then promptly forget them. However, if you want to benefit from procrastination quotes, then you need to find a way to remember them, so they have an impact on your life. Here are some tips for getting inspiration from quotes.

Read it Often

For procrastination quotes to have an impact on your life, they should be read frequently. Either put a poster of the quote on your wall, download it onto your smartphone, or write it down and carry it with you so you can take it out and read it whenever you want inspiration. By reading it several times a day, not only will you memorize it, but it can act as an affirmation.

Meditate on Message

After reading a quote, take a few moments to meditate on what it says to you. Quotes can have different meanings for people, so you should take some time to determine what procrastination quotes are telling you if you’re trying to improve on that aspect of your life.

Consider the Meaning

Sometimes the message isn’t in the actual words but is found between the lines. For instance, Ben Franklin’s quote about procrastination, “You may delay, but time will not,” can convey different messages when you study it.

While the words speak against procrastination, if you read the quote several times, you may interpret it in other ways. Its message may tell you that ignoring family responsibilities means losing time with those you love. It can also mean that time, and people, will move on without you if you put off striving for your goals.

Know the Difference

When you’re looking up procrastination quotes on the internet, you will see many memes with sayings and quotes on them. However, there are differences between them you should know.

A quote consists of words that someone has said or written, with credit given to the source if it is known. A saying is a short expression that may be clever and has some truth in its meaning. If you want to cure procrastination, then procrastination quotes from a famous person will usually have more impact than a saying from an unknown source.

Quotes can be powerful tools and provide the inspiration you need to make changes and live the life you’ve always wanted.

Is Networking Wasting Your Time?

That is a direct challenge, isn’t it? Is Networking wasting our time?

In order to find out, lets do some discovery.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • How many hours a week you spend networking versus marketing or sales?
  • Do you effectively follow-up after a networking event?
  • Do you actively make referrals for others?
  • How many referrals or projects have you received in the last 2 month?
  • What is the ratio of hours spent (preparation, travel, event, and follow-up) to money earned?
  • Do you track the success of their networking? If not, why not? If you are effectively managing your business, you track sales calls, appointments, contracts. You do that to see what is working and what is not working. By tracking you can take a step back and see what you can not see on the surface. You will find patterns, identify gaps and see what you need to do to make your sales efforts more effective.

Is Networking making the best use of your time management? Like any other lead generation method such as social media, cold calling, tradeshows-it depends on how you use it and what is the opportunity cost of that time.

Note that networking has become big business so promoters tell you networking is the way to build your business. Networking can have its benefits but you have to weigh the cost-benefit of any activity you are going to engage in.

Let’s look at how to manage time from a networking perspective. Keep in mind that busy is not productive. Going to many networking events can keep you very busy but won’t necessarily be productive. Networking can be counter productive by creating a lot of busy work that takes time away from more effective marketing.

Time management skills can be built on the work you need to do before you network. Most people have not defined these areas clear enough and that is one of the reasons networking is less effective and definitely not efficient.

Defining you Audience

Who will be at this event? Do they represent your target audience, the people who will buy your products and services? Are they the decision makers? How else could you be reaching this audience? List the options so you can evaluate the time, cost and depth of interaction you can have with each method.

Your message

Do you have a clear message to convey so when you meet people you can clearly describe what you do and what makes you different? How will they remember you over everyone else they met at the event? How can you easily remind them in your follow-up?

Follow up

Do you have the time to commit to the necessary follow-up? In what form will you follow-up. Make sure the next day or two after the event you block time to make follow-up phone calls because your window of recollection closes after a few days if not a few minutes. The more you can prepare before the event to make the follow-up fast and effective, the more likely you are to see success.

I know a business owner who requires his people to go to all these evening networking events and join networking groups to make all sorts of connections to potential clients either directly or through others. The company provides personal training and they have a high-end offer for one-on-one personal training.

Over the years as a client of his, I have seen the staff come and go. One of the biggest challenges they have is that the staff cant get the business in the door. Their Networking isn’t effective in creating sales. In essence, they are doing the same thing over and over..and getting the same result. You know what that means. Insanity! Are you following the insanity model too? Networking and not getting any results?

If the elements above fit, it could be effective but it is a tactical time consuming and long-term approach to go after them one by one. It is the spray and pray approach that many sales people engage in, they go after any prospect and write a thousand proposals praying that one of these will be a fit.

It is time to get more strategic and much more targeted.

Shift your focus from networking to strategic partnerships. Look at the 80/20 rule or to add greater focus 5% of your network should be your strategic partners. 90% of your networking energy should going to those 5%.

Identifying the 5% you have or need to meet will be easier and more focused and will definitely deliver you better results.

Few time management tools can get you to think and act more strategically, but the best time management tips are centered around how to do just that. Strategy will win over tactics every time.

It is time to take a step back and re-evaluate the effectiveness of your networking efforts. Change your networking focus ad change your results.

12 Ways to Avoid Distractions

Distractions are killing your productivity. Top Time management tips to stay focused. These time management strategies give you options to avoid and conquer distractions.

Has this happened to you? You go online to investigate a topic and you find yourself sucked into a vortex of interesting articles that no longer have anything to do with what you were researching…but you may need it another time. You made a quick call with a friend to clarify an appointment but they wouldn’t let you off the phone. You are working on a project and your project team is constantly coming in to ask you random questions. Getting things done can be a challenge with all the distractions that surround you on a day to day basis!

Here are 12 ways to combat distractions. All of these are time management tips you have heard but are likely forgetting and /or not applying. Maybe one or two are new for you and will give you a new perspective on blocking distractions and staying focused!

Handling distractions:

  1. Timers

Set timer to create a psychological marker. It makes it a game and put some urgency into your mind to get you to think faster on your feet to get things done more effectively and efficiently. You also can plan breaks in between each timed session giving you’re the reward for your focused attention.

  1. Set deadlines

Setting deadlines is another urgency trick for our brain to help shift us into action. Without a deadline, it is easy to procrastinate and continue to push off the activity. A deadline makes the task a project and allows you to plan for completion. It will have the effect to get your more focused and block out distractions more easily.

  1. Turn off electronics

Duh. Your bells and whistles will distract you and interrupt your train of thought. This is the same as multi-tasking and has been proven as a big no-no for productivity. Depending on which study you read, the experts say it takes 23 minutes to get back your full attention on a project matter.

Plan the times you look at your devices and turn off the ringer.

  1. Schedule breaks

Breaks are an essential part of rejuvenation. How you manage your energy tells you whether you will make good use of the next hour or squander it away. When you allow yourself a short break to get up and take a walk, watch a short video or listen to some music, you are helping yourself be more focused on the time you are working. Without breaks, your threshold to keep your attention on one thing can be easily broken. Breaks are not lazy rather a productivity strategy. Einstein was an infamous napper and he seemed to be pretty focused and productive.

  1. Track distractions

Get a handle on your distractions by tracking them. I know it may seem annoying but record all the distractions you have for a week. You will be surprised at what you learn from this exercise and how much better you can avoid them when you realize where they are coming from.

  1. Brain dump

David Allen is a big fan. Dump out all that you have in your head so you can be free to focus on the next activity. Give yourself 5 minutes before you end a block, leave a meeting or start something new and write down where you were, what is next and anything else you need to let go of. Evernote (https://evernote.com) is a great tool for that and has a great search engine to find it again.

  1. Get up earlier

You don’t have the time? Here is one way to make more time. Get up earlier and use the peace and quiet from the morning to get the most important things to you done first.

  1. Make a plan

When you have a plan for the day, you can be more focused on achieving it. It makes you more proactive versus getting caught up in whatever comes along. This sense of control keeps you more focused and more resistant to distractions.

  1. Connect to purpose and why important

When you are connecting to why something is important, this provides another psychology means to stay focused. You connect with its importance and stay on track.

  1. Clean up the clutter

Clutter creates distraction. Clean your desk before you leave and clear your head before you start the day and see how big the increase is in your ability to stay focused.

  1. Get more sleep

No “if’s”, “and’s” or “but’s”, sleep makes a difference in making us more resilient and more resistant to distractions. Most people stay up late doing nothing important. Use that time for true recharge. Watching TV, despite our excuses is not a productive recharge. If you find it hard to focus, give yourself another 45 minutes of sleep and see how that might add to your ability to focus. You won’t know until you try it. Top performers don’t say they will sleep wen they are dead!

  1. Say no

Practice saying no to people. If you are overloaded that in itself is causing a distraction. Look at your calendar and respectfully bow out of a few things to get your focus back.

It is only your responsibility to proactively block distractions so that your environment is productive. You have to protect your space and time because if you don’t manage your time, someone else will.

What is time management? Well, managing distractions is a subset of your time management efforts. Managing distractions is how you manage time. Staying focused during the time you have can be the most important time management skill.

It is time to build this new muscle and get one up on the distractions that are sabotaging your goals and your productivity.

10 Social Media Alternative Options to be More Productive

Social media is known to be a productivity killer. The average person will spend more than five years of their lives on social media, according to a study by influencer marketing agency Mediakix. That is derived from the daily usage figures below.

While there are alternative options, why do we turn to social media?

Some people are on social media to promote their businesses, but I see three major reasons we reach for social media. They are there to procrastinate from work or look for solace and connection.

Let’s examine each one.

1. Boredom:
If you aren’t clear what you are doing next why not jump into a social media app and read something to pass the time. People are not happy with down time so we seek stimulation. If we are waiting in line – check social media, stuck on hold- check social media, even in the bathroom-check social media. Sad but true.

Here are some more productive alternatives to fight off boredom and boost your energy and focus when you return.

1. Go for a walk in nature:
Getting out of your day-to-day environment and into nature is a great way to get your body moving, change your breathing and energize your mind.

2. Drink a glass of water:
As simple as it is, getting up and getting a glass of water changes your chemistry to break the pattern of thought you were having so that when you come back you can be in a different state of mind.

3. Learn/enhance a skill:
If you want a productive break, take the time to learn a new skill that will support reaching your goals faster or fulfill a personal desire with something you love.

4. Medivate:
I made up this new word to combine the benefits of clarity and focus of both meditation and motivation. The definition is to focus ones mind during deep breathing for a period of time on something inspirational that that creates intensity, direction, and persistence.

2. Need Inspired:

Just seeing a picture on social media may inspire you for a new meal idea for dinner or a moment but it isn’t enough to inspire you to consistently eat healthier and make a long term change in your life for the better.

Here is what I do to inspire myself:
1. Go outside into nature:
Getting out into nature is a great way to get your mind clear and open you up to new ideas. When we are in nature and move our body we can tap into more creativity. Stop doing if you want to get creative and inspired.

2. Watch a TED talk:

3. Listen to Music:
Music can be a beautiful inspiration and it isn’t really doing anything so you are also giving your mind a rest so you can recharge your energy reserves towards what you need to do afterward.

When you connect to your goals and really appreciate why they are important to you, you can re-ignite your inspiration

3. Seeking Connection:

One of our basic needs as a human is to connect with others. We know that babies die if they are not held after birth. We all have a deep seeded need to belong to a group and feel like we matter

One way of feeling like we belong is to click that picture that others have clicked. My peeps. We share a common interest. That isn’t the best form of connection but it is fast and easy and out brains are always looking for fast and easy. The greater the intensity of emotion the higher the connection. Of course, you want to seek a positive experience creating a positive connection.

Here are a few more productive ways to create connection for ourselves that is deeper and richer than social media provides us.

1. Compliment people
When we receive compliments it makes us feel good. Why not take a break and walk around passing out compliments and see that it doesn’t only feel good to get compliments but to give them as well.

2. Pet some animals
There is something peaceful in animals that bring out our unconditional love. It doesn’t matter that we haven’t met this animal before, you give this animal your love and attention and they give it back in return. There is a reason animals are supporting people with stress emotional disorders, they have a healing nature about them.

3. Wow someone
Someone coined the expression “Giving is living”. When you give or do something special for someone, it makes them feel good and you feel good too! Start giving more and bring more energy to everything you do.

Turning to social media isn’t always the best chose for one of these needs. The reason being is it still requires a lot of stimulation at a time we need to recharge. Time management tips can also be about what to do in your free times, breaks and transitions to better manage your energy when you are working. When you want to recharge energy your best source is not going to be with further stimulation with social media but focus on rejuvenation of the mind, body, and spirit.

Interview Bill Walsh | Quantum Productivity

I am so excited today and want to welcome you to our first episode.  You are here because you want more.  You want the knowledge, the skills, and the resources on how to achieve more in your life.  By this, I mean, have your cake and eat it too.  Health, love, money, and balance.  Take charge of your productivity will do more than inspire you.  It will open you up to a new perspective.  For our first show, we are going to talk about dramatic productivity growth, or quantum growth in your productivity.  We want to get as much out of life as possible.  It is my experience that quantum productivity occurs when we learn how to manage our energy vs. our time.  This radio program is dedicated to you gaining new insights and perspectives around the ten core elements of time and energy management.  We will be speaking with various authors to get their perspective on those areas.  It’s important to know that these areas are relevant to you individually but also your business.  Strategies are cross contextual.  Today, we are so honored to have Bill Walsh here to talk about his concepts.  He is CEO and founder of Business Coaching Venture Capital Firm Power Team International.  Bill hosts and speaks all over the world.  He loves to help people to understand specifically what it takes to build business successfully.  He is a venture capitalist accomplished author, speaker and radio personality.  Bill, I am so excited to have you here today.  Welcome.

B:  I am excited too.  Congratulations on your first show Penny.  Everyone listening, this is a show you want to plug into all of the time.  I know the quality of your work. 

P:  Thanks Bill.  I have seen your passion in helping people grow their business.  I would like you to share what really motivated you to get into self-development?

B:  I was about 14 years old I was around individuals where the parents would take their kids and go racing.  Certain parents had every weekend off.  They could leave on a Friday and come back late Sunday night.  They couldn’t worry about going to work, and they had extra money.  It was about quality time with quality people.  They owned their own time.  They told me you need to figure out what it takes to find something you are passionate about and you will live a life that only some people can dream of.

P:  I like what you said about owning their own time.  That is what take charge of your productivity is about.  Owning your time.  From watching other people’s parents you saw what you wanted for yourself.  We want to learn from the best.  Could you share what and who really influenced you the most?

Quantum productivityB:  My dad did.  He was an electrician and he obviously worked unbelievable hours.  He would put in x amount of hours and then get a check for that.  He also said to me, do what you love.  Whether you fail or not, is part of the story.  It will work out as long as you are serving people.  He was one of my first coaches.  Football, baseball.  Even though he worked during the day, he still coached.  As I got older, I selected mentors.  I looked at individuals that lived a life of quality and integrity of serving lots of people.  I figured out ways to get connected with those individuals.  People like Brian Tracy, Les Brown, John Grey, and I have been blessed with work with the sharpest people in the world.  By creating value first in their lives and then building an amazing relationship with them. 

P:  Mentors are so important.  To the listeners, who are your mentors?  I like how you said select those people to have as your mentors.  I want to encourage the listeners to make a note to select their mentors.  What characteristics do they want to aspire to?  What leaders do they want to follow?  So important. I want to ask you about your book.  You talked about the eleven obvious laws of business success.  Can you share what are these laws and uh, what inspired you to create these?

B:  Most of the laws are common sense.  It’s not that we don’t know these things, like serve others at a high level, or how important our time is, or how to understand our own value.  What happens is we get clouded.  People watch tv and it is designed to pollute your mind.  People thing garbage in and garbage stays.  When it stays, it pollutes.  Until you go back to the basics, mastering the mundane, most people like to get up early or go to bed late.  What if you were totally inspired, that is one of the big things I talk about in the book.  I believe motivation is a spark.  To start the juice flowing.  The problem is you can’t push people to do things.  It’s like pushing a rope.  It doesn’t work.  Inspiration is something that will pull you where you are going.  Imagine waking up so inspired about your life that you get pulled into your success.  What happens if you motivate a bunch of idiots, what do you have?

P:  A motivated bunch of idiots.

B:  They are all jumping around and not going anywhere.  Then the old self-doubt comes back in.  When you can truly inspire someone, they get pulled into their lives in a form of passion and purpose.  They know in their mind and heart where they are going.  That is what people find a powerful presence to succeed.  It comes from within.  Not the outside.  Those are some of the things I talk about.  It’s about common sense wrapped around in stories.  All of the stories you hear about are about 15 years in the making.

P:  I like how you said inspiration vs. motivation, I had an amazing mentor a number of years ago who said, he is not here to motivate me because the motivation comes from within.  He is here to take away any roadblocks that keep me from moving forward.  I thought is was an insightful way to look at motivation.  You have to motivate yourself. 

B:  You can motivate all you want but if you don’t educate, they are going to die.  What I have learned is that you don’t know something until you live it.  Once you live it, you can own it and know it.  I do believe that external motivation is never going to move you very far.  Internal inspiration will get you as far as you want to go in life. 

P:  Energy management.  It’s not just about the time.  So many people are focused on the time aspect on it.  They will get more productive through time.  But I believe it’s about the energy aspect of it.  Passion and purpose are two important elements that make up energy management.  What is your feel about that?

B:  I believe that energy is neutral.  People think money is evil or it doesn’t grow on trees.  I believe money equals energy.  When you provide more value, you are going to get more money.  Most people spend most of their life chasing money.  Usually those people stay broke.  If they are not financially broke, they are mentally broke.  I believe that everything is energy.  We are all energy.  Some people come into a room and they literally dim the lights.  Other people come into the room and it brightens up.  You can feel their presence, even when they are not present.  It’s not about staying away from negative people.  The universe will always give you more of what you don’t want.  If you focus on negative people, you will attract more negative people.   Where if you begin to focus on only spending time with inspiring powerful, high integrity, over the top people, that is what you will attract in your life. A friend said, when you let go of some of the old, you can make room for some of the new.  Its a great principal.  So many doors open up and new people come into your life.  They are the ones who deserve your quality time. 

P:  We are going to take a short break.

P:  Welcome Back.  We are about to get into the heart of the show of quantum productivity.  I like to ask everybody who is on my show this question.  How do you define productivity and why?

A:  What happens when you are not in the picture?  I believe that quantum productivity starts with how effective are you when you are not in the wave.  So often I tell people, we operate many times from a place of unconscious competence or incompetence or conscious incompetence.  I understand that the subconscious mind works while you sleep.  I share a process called ten before ten.  Every night you will write out the ten most important things you can do before ten the next morning to be the most profitable and productive things.  We don’t realize how powerful our mind is.  Our mind will work on things even while you are sleeping.  If you write them down, you will sleep better, sleep less and sleep deeper, and you will wake up with many of the answers you are looking for relating to the task you need to accomplish the next morning.  You may even learn how to delegate.  How to learn about the things you are good at and delegate the things that you suck at.  Stop doing the things that you truly suck at.  It sucks the life out of you.  It’s a double suck.  Once somebody can step into doing only the things they are great at, they are going to understand what quantum productivity looks like.  You will begin to see how everyone around you moves in slow motion.  You become an intuitive performer.  We build them.  You only operate from a place called unconscious competence.  You wake up and know exactly what you are supposed to be doing.  You step into the flow.  You see this in sports.  You watch athletes like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and singers like Céline Dion.  They literally own that space they are in and they focus only on the things that they are great at. 

P:  Going back to energy.  When we are optimizing our energy by flow, getting into the place where we are most energetic.  Doing things that build our energy.  Not doing things that suck your energy.  I love the ten before ten.  Imagine, if you are getting ten of the most important things done before ten am.  How great do you feel? 

B:  Try this for fourteen days.  You will see your productivity will grow.  What else happens is that your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions and your actions become your habits.  Successful people consistently have successful habits.

P:  A habit requires a lot of energy.  I am still trying to do something that is not 100 percent ingrained into who I am.  This ten before ten starts out as a habit and then it should become part of who you are.  That is the step through into that flow. 

B:  You know when you are in flow.  Smooth incredible days.  What are the top three things you can do?  Most great CEO’s don’t do more than two or three things great.  The minimum wage for a millionaire is $524 an hour.  If you goal is to be a millionaire, are you doing things that are at that wage range. 

P:  I heard you say millionaires delegate everything.  From my experience in coaching with Tony Robbins and Chet Holmes, people learn right up front as we start to work together, that the strategies they had were great in getting them to where they are now, but they are not necessarily the right skill set they need to get to the next level.  How do you think people can really change their mind set to get into this flow more often?

B:  It starts with motivation and inspiration.  They don’t just find their motivation.  They start with a big vision and that vision will pull you to where you are going.  Like Starbucks.  Everything with this company was about being the biggest brand.  The world’s largest experience coffee place.  So much is about the power of focus.  Step into your vision.  I believe as children, we are born with great gifts.  Somewhere along the line, the wires get crossed where we are told we are dumb or stupid.  We are put into an educational program that is designed for these kids to fail.  In Chicago, less than fifty percent graduate from high school.  We have the best universities in the world.  At some point, we are polluting the minds of our kids to move them away from having that powerful vision.  It’s about committing and focusing and never quitting.

P:  Do you believe there is an x factor for quantum productivity?

B:  I think you have to realize we are not productive.  That we are not doing our greatest skill set.  People take jobs for their whole lives in positions that they can’t stand.  Shea Vaugne is one of my close friends.  Her son is Vince Vaughne.  I saw the movie Internship.  It didn’t get good reviews and it didn’t surprise me because anything that pushes people to step outside the box, those movies don’t work because many times we don’t like to see people do well.  We like to see people fail or get hurt.  The reason people watch the news is because they want to see people do worse than them.  A big part of the x factor is that everyone has to realize that it is possible.  Once you can go from realizing that oh, I am not sure to its possible.  That is what the movie was about.  What was possible?  The x factor is YOU.  You are the x factor.  Are you going to X yourself off of the screen or off of the game? 

P:  Tap into that vision.  Step into it.

B:  Everybody has their own set of green glasses.  If you wear these big coke bottle green glasses, the only thing you will see is green.  You will think everything is green even though people are telling you otherwise.  So, once you can remove the green glasses and really get a view of what is going on, its incredible how powerful your vision becomes. 

P:  Opening up new perspectives.  It’s time to take a break.

P:  Welcome back.  We are speaking about quantum productivity with Bill Walsh.  You mentioned the movie the Internship and that people are not excited about movies that talk about what is possible and what occurred to me is sometimes with movies that are inspirational like that, people are fearful of it bringing them to the edge of their comfort zone.  I think a lot of what hold people back from success is that coming up to the edge of the comfort zone, the fear factor.  Can you share some of your views around that?

B:  I think that fear is what leads to self-doubt.  Self-doubt is the number one killer of small business.  Once we fail a couple times at something, we decide to quit.  That is what kills SoHo’s or people in the marketing industry.  I wish they would tell people that the two equations for success is this:  persistence plus failure equals success.  So all of a sudden, if they can remove the fear, he is how you do it.  After years in business, with absolute faith there is very little room for fear.  Understanding how someone else has already has done this.  It means you are not the first person to do this.  Are you going to commit to your big vision or big dreams or are you just going to talk about it.  Rockefeller said as he got older he would stop listening to what people would say, he would watch what they do.  Fear is going to always be there.  The question is are you going to let fear or faith take over?  If you truly have faith in where you are going, you will go far.  What books do you read?  Who are the people you spend your time with?  I challenge you today, and you want to achieve big goals, with massive results, who is on your team?  Surround yourself with really smart people.

P:  In sports, if you want to get better, play better players.  That will help my game. 

B:  Watch how they are playing.  Are your fab 5 who inspire you and move you?  Or are you the smartest person in your group?  If you are the smartest, then you need a new group.  I am also a big believer in that imagination is the open gateway to all of your unlimited possibilities.  You are powerful.

P:  Look at imagination and visualization.  A strategy that successful people use.  Olympic sports or business success.  They talk about Michael Phelps and his visualization of him getting into the water and moving through.  Getting in that flow.  Standing and collecting the gold. There were studies that showed that people who were doing lay ups actually did the same as those who practiced constantly.  A learning mindset is important, what role do you think learning plays in our productivity?

B:  Knowledge is power but sometimes I would have ignorance on fire than knowledge on ice.  I have met very smart people who are broke and idiots who are wealthy.  Learning is paramount as long as you put the learning to use.  If you think because you have done all of the studies, that you will get it.  Learning is only one part of the process.  I can give you all of the books and tapes and videos on how to be great, but learning by itself can be dangerous.  Learning in combination with experience.  I believe that one of the greatest ways to learn something is to do it.

P:  The three most dangerous words out there is I know this.  Right?  I actually heard there was a study that showed that the brain actually shuts down from listening and bringing in new perspectives and insight when you go into that mode of I know this.  It’s important to be open. 

B:  From experience you learn, what you did right and what you did wrong.  Once you start to realize that nobody has all of the answers.  We all have tons to learn.  When you stop learning you stop living. 

P:  That learning mindset that really takes us to the next level. 

B:  What do you do that you work on to really step into your most powerful amazing presence.  I know you have so much to share.

P:  Tapping into a vision and passion.  I have always been an optimizer.  I started with technology and improving prophecies.  I moved to the mindset and how people think.  How to make things better.  I think the key is the learning.  I always want to keep myself in a perspective when I can look at something that doesn’t go the way I want it to saying, ok, what does that mean exactly.  How can I learn from this?  Steve Lindor taught me these four questions:  What does that mean and what else could that mean?  You look at the different perspectives and what can I learn from this?  How can I integrate this?  Then it’s about sharing with others.  I learned a lot in Switzerland and their culture. 

B:  With all of the inventions in technology we will get more productive.  What I recommend is that get all of your most productive things done first thing in the morning.  You now have the rest of the day to yourself.

5 Ways to Stop Procrastinating

Would you be surprised to know that our brain is wired to support procrastination? It is. Your brain simply wants to avoid pain at all costs. It is painful to doing something boring, work that you aren’t connected to, something you don’t see the value in, a difficult conversation and so on.

It is the discomfort that we perceive that keeps us from actually doing it.

The avoidance continues until the pain is greater not to do the task because the consequence are more dire.

Let’s not confuse someone who gets things done and assume they are not procrastinators. Some people accomplish an amazing amount of work, just not the tasks that they’ve been procrastinating on. Perhaps they are completing the least most important or urgent tasks that they need to get done. You know who you are.

It reminds me of an interview I did with John Perry around his book The Art of Procrastination: A Guide to Effective Dawdling, Lollygagging and Postponing.

He actually argues that procrastinators get more done because they put things off. They accomplish a whole host of other tasks while they’re procrastinating and then due to the pressure of putting things off they also accomplish the thing that they been procrastinating on. Really…

They just need to learn to plan better and set more realistic goals and milestones.

Also, let’s not confuse people who set priorities as procrastinators. There will always be more to do what’s possible to get done and therefore Setting priorities isn’t everyday reality. It doesn’t mean that we are procrastinating on getting certain tasks done, it simply means these tasks are not the highest priority.

Of course, you need to look at the various different options of how to accomplish those tasks in another way. But at the end of the day, if it isn’t the highest priority, it doesn’t get done. Often these people overwork themselves into probable burnout as opposed to learning how to Let go of the attachment of lower priority items, learn to communicate and set better expectations with others and yourself. If you work in an emergency room- It isn’t just first come first serve it is the more critical cases first. Because this rule system is already established, doctors and nurses don’t stress over it. They just go ahead serving who ever is next and focusing to the best of their ability on one case at a time.

Habitual procrastinators experience fееlings ѕuсh аѕ guilt, shamefulness, inadequacy, ѕеlf-сritiсiѕm, lоw self-esteem and ѕtrеѕѕ. The more times we make excuses the more acceptable those excuses become. That is the vicious cycle and we tend to feel those unproductive emotions that also keep us from taking action.

For some it’ѕ a fruѕtrаting habit and for others it is they revel in it and wear it like a badge of honor.

No matter what you are telling yourself, procrastination keeps you from the very things you want such as bigger deals, financial security, a loving imitate relationship, joy and happiness, health and wellness, spiritual connection and more.

Hоw саn you brеаk the viсiоuѕ cycle thаt рrеvеntѕ you from асhiеving mоrе? Start with awareness.

  1. Change your Self-talk
    What are the excuses you used to use? Write them down and diѕсоvеr hоw it аffесtѕ уоu, When you hear yourself say them to yourself, say “NO”. Rе-рrоgrаm уоur brain frоm the excuses or negative ѕеlf-tаlk to positive productive self-talk.
    Try rерlасing it with positive statements to move you to action such as “just do it”, “What is next?”, “5-4-3-2-1 gеt started” This last one is a brilliant, simple Trick from Mel Robbins: The 5 Second Rule: Transform your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage. Her 5 Second Rule is a simple strategy that has impacted millions of people worldwide.
  2. Viѕuаlizе thе End frоm thе Bеginning                                                                                                                                                 You are the сrеаtоr of yоur оwn dеѕtinу. When you diѕсоvеr thе imроrtаnсе оf envisioning yourselves doing what you hаvе ѕеt оut tо dо, аll оf sudden it appears rеаl and асhiеvаblе. Create an imаgе of what it is likе tо complete a specific task or goal and see yourself on the other side of completion. Make the pleasure great enough to out weigh any initial pain (it is suggested a 3:1 ratio). Whаt bеnеfitѕ are уоu rеарing? What are уоu feeling when achieved? What is now true for you?
  3. Identify уоur Pеrѕоnаl or Prоfеѕѕiоnаl Gоаlѕ                                                                                                                              Set your SMART Goals (Specific, Measurable, Accountable, Realistic, and Time Driven. Know why they are important to achieve (previous point). Mаѕtеr the art оf brеаking big task intо ѕmаll раrtѕ, so уоu саn соmрlеtе thе tаѕk stress-free. Schedule time for those important tasks to be sure you are continuously moving forward. This is the recipe for success.
  4. Make a Publiс Commitment                                                                                                                                                         Tеll ѕоmеоnе сlоѕе tо уоu thаt you hаvе tо complete a ѕресifiс tаѕk аnd thеу can hоld уоu ассоuntаblе, by dоing ѕо I guаrаntее it will givе you the pressure уоu nееd to kеер gоing. Yоu wоuldn’t wаnt tо lеt them down so this will offset the pressure of the pain that might make you procrastination. Consider it an insurance policy.

Doing it now will create momentum. This is an important ingredient to breaking your old behavior and speed your success. Discipline уоurѕеlf to use time wiѕеlу аnd рriоritizе.
